A useful travel deal is the option that meets your needs at the lowest acceptable total cost. Compare the same dates, travellers, room or fare, luggage and cancellation terms. Then apply the discount to its eligible amount and add any compulsory charges. A larger percentage is not automatically a lower final bill.
Start with one shared booking brief
Write down what you need before opening several tabs. For accommodation, record nights, guests, room type and meal plan. For a flight, use the same airports, travel dates and baggage. For a transfer, use the same pickup time, route, passengers and luggage. An offer missing something essential is a different product.
Keep a second list of preferences you can trade away. A later departure might be acceptable; an airport two hours away might not. This separates a real saving from a cheaper booking that quietly adds work or expense.
Use a like-for-like worksheet
The figures below are invented examples to show the method. They are not live prices or offers from a particular service.
| Item | Offer A | Offer B |
|---|---|---|
| Accommodation for the same dates | $300 | $330 |
| Discount that actually applies | −$30 | −$15 |
| Compulsory charge excluded above | $40 | $0 |
| Breakfast you planned to buy | $30 | Included |
| Comparable total | $340 | $315 |
Offer A advertises a bigger discount, but costs $25 more for this traveller. If breakfast is unnecessary, remove it from both calculations. Your comparison should reflect what you will buy, not an inflated bundle value.
What belongs in the total?
Include amounts you must pay and extras you already know you need. Keep refundable deposits separate: a deposit can affect the cash or card limit required even when it is not a final expense. Do not subtract a future reward as though it were a discount already applied.
| Booking | Check before comparing |
|---|---|
| Hotel or apartment | Total stay price, taxes or fees due later, meals, cleaning charges, cancellation deadline |
| Flight | Baggage you need, seats if required, airport transfers, change terms |
| Airport transfer | Vehicle capacity, child seats, waiting time, pickup instructions, cancellation |
| eSIM | Data allowance, usable destinations, validity start, top-up needs and device compatibility |
For an eSIM, compare the plan with your journey, not just its price per gigabyte. Airalo explains that activation can begin on installation or connection, depending on the package. Check the package's policy before buying early. Airalo validity guidance.
Separate today's saving from a future reward
A $10 checkout reduction lowers today's payment by $10. A promised $10 credit for another booking does not. Record future credit in a separate column with its expiry, eligible products and any minimum spend. Value it only if you expect to use it under those rules.
Also keep different currencies separate until you have an exchange rate from your payment provider. Avoid assuming that a card's conversion cost is included in the merchant's display.
Finish at the final order screen
Refresh the price with the exact travellers and dates selected. Confirm that the discount appears, then save the final price and cancellation terms. If a code is rejected, compare the remaining total before spending more time searching for another code.
